may day 2010
May Day is an international celebration of the
campaign that started nearly 200 years ago to achieve an
eight hour working day. This, and the broader
campaign for fairness and rights at work that May Day
has been historically linked to, are just as important
today.
May Day originated in the struggle of the American Trade
Union movement for an eight hour day and reached its
height in the 1890s. Strikes in the early 1820s -
30s for a ten hour day had been successful in a number
of American cities.
Australia was the world leader in the fight for an Eight
Hour Day. In 1856 an eight hour day was won by
building tradesmen in Victoria. It was the 1920s
before this was achieved across the whole country.
