We had a
raffle at the Fight for the Future Conference to raise money
for Union Aid Abroad – APHEDA. APHEDA is the
Australian People for Health,
Education and Development Abroad and was created in 1984 as the
overseas aid agency of the Australian Council of Trade Unions.
Union Aid Abroad is committed to justice and solidarity and to self
reliance, not charity. It builds self-reliance through support to
educational and training projects for workers and their organisations
in Southeast Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East, Southern Africa and
the Caribbean.
We raised
$168.00 at the conference. The following letter is from Peter
Jennings, Executive Officer from APHEDA:
Dear
Jodie
Thank you
for your donation of $168.00, being funds raised at the recent
National Conference for Young Workers, to Union Aid Abroad –
APHEDA’s International Programs.
Recently
these donations have been used to support vocational education for
youth in East Timor. This training includes carpentry workshops to
make furniture to sell, fresh vegetable farming skills for income
generation and sewing skills training for rural women. Such
vocational skills training has allowed even more East Timorese to
create a new livelihood for themselves and their families.
Projects
such as these are essential to preventing the development of further
conflict in the region. Allowing youth to develop skills to broaden
their employment opportunities employers the people of
East Timor and provides alternatives to violence and
distrust.
On behalf
of our project partners, thank you for your fundraising efforts and
contribution to the communities in East Timor.
Your generosity is appreciated.
